"This history of the SHELVER family has been made possible through the personal time, expense, and dedicated efforts of Mrs. Helen Shelver Swanson, Moorhead, Minnesota.  Aunt Helen has devoted untold hours at reviewing family and cemetery records.  She has also absorbed the financial burden of many personal trips, telephone calls, and mail expenses necessary to gather the information to compile this report.  Speaking for myself and the many others who will read this, I wish to express my thanks to her.

Nils Nilson Hornbek
(est. 1775)
____________________________________________

NILS NILSON and his wife of Hornbek, Norway had two sons.  They were CHRISTIAN and JACOB.

CHRISTIAN was born in 1803 and died in 1880.  He was married to Kirsti Bergersdatter.  To CHRISTIAN and Kirsti were born six daughters and one son.  They were MARTHA, MAREN, HANNAH, MARIE, CLARE, OLIANA, and OLAF.  Three daughters came to America.  As CHRISTIAN purchased more land he added estate names, so he became CHRISTIAN NILSON GJETERUD SANDER.  The three daughters who came to America were:

MAREN SANDER was born August 12, 1835.  She married Lars Oleson Guldlin in Oslo, Norway.  She and her husband came to the United States and eventually settled in Valley City, North Dakota.  She died in 1924 and is buried in a cemetery in Valley City.  Her husband is buried there also.

OLIANA SANDER married an Erickson and they had one son named Thorwald.  they lived in Oslo.  They also came to America.

KAREN SANDER (Karen must be a second name for one of the six) made her home in the United States and married a pastor, the Rev. Refling of Chicago, Illinois.

JACOB NELSON was born in 1798 at Hornbek, Norway and was married to MARTHA IVARSDATTER.  MARTHA was born on the Skjaelver farm near Grue that Jacob purchased.  This farm is in Akerhus County.  It is northeast of Oslo.  This is good timber country and much of the timber on the Skjaelver farm was shipped to the U.S. for furniture making.  JACOB and MARTHA had three sons and one daughter.  they were JACOB, JOHANNES (great-grandfather to Peter Schneider), NELS and ELI.

NELS took the name of Jacobson.  In Norway a man could take the name of the family, farm, locality, surname or if in the Army you were given their name.  NELS chose the surname of Jacobson.  He was born in 1826 near Grue.  He married Johanna Kristiansdatter.  When he purchased the Gaard farm he took that name.  NELS and his wife had five children.  All the children came to America.  Their children were Brady, Jacob, Martha, Rikka and Karen.  NELS passed away February 7, 1886.

BRADY GAARD took a homestead south and west of West Fargo.  he was married to Pauline Paulson.  Their children were Joseph, Harold, Norton and Betsy.  Joseph married Ida Johnson and they had three daughters.  Harold remained single.  Norton married and lived in Michigan.  Betsy married Ingvald Vangerud.  They had a son and a daughter, Betsy and Paul.

JACOB GAARD married Olivia Solberg.  They had two sons, both named Norton.  The first son died when young.  Jacob had a furniture store in Fargo.  Then he added a funeral parlor but the business was too much to handle so he gave up the furniture business and concentrated on mortuary work only.  The embalming fluid was too drastic for his lungs, which killed him in 1913.  His son Norton took over his father’s business but it was not to his liking and with his wanderlust he gave up the business.  He was married and divorced.  He lived in Texas and died there.  His body was shipped to Fargo where he is buried on the cemetery lot with his folks.

MARTHA GAARD daughter of NELS was married to Emil Kiel.  he was a brother of Mrs. Jacob Shelver.  He came to the U.S. and had to change his name from Skjitren to Kiel as it was not a dignified name in America.  Martha was born in July, 1860 and died in 1935.  Emil was born in August 1856 and died 1887.

Their children were Jennie, Emma, Oscar and Emil.  Jennie was born in 1882.  She married Knute Johnson and they had two daughters, Elsie and Florence.  Elsie married Al Lawrence was divorced and went to New York City where she became a model.  She married Fred Kennedy and had two children by him, Robert and Joyce.  Florence married a Witzki.

EMMA KIEL was married to Charles Johnson.  she was born in 1883.  She and her husband had two children, Clifford and Myrtle.  Clifford was married and divorced.  He had two children.  he is living at the Fargo Mission now.  Myrtle married Leo Rock and they had a daughter Gloria.  They were divorced and Gloria married James Lundstrom.  Myrtle lives in Texas and so do her daughter and grand-daughter.

OSCAR KIEL was born June 25, 1885.  He remained single.  he was never a well man and had many surgical operations.

EMIL KIEL was born June 10, 1888 and remained single.  he is the only surviving member of his family.  His father passed away before he was born so his mother named him after his father.  The two brothers Emil and Oscar made the farm home of their sister Emma their home for many years.  At 99 years of age Emil with his keen mind and interest in life keeps himself occupied with his “dogs and cats” as he tells folks.  he makes dogs and cats out of yarn while o=living out his old age at the lovely Bethany Towers in Fargo.

RIKKA GAARD daughter of NELS married Emil Olson.  They had 11 children.  Four boys and seven girls.  They were Nels, Ole, Edward, Torstein, Jennie, Agnes, Nina, Mabel, May and Rhoda.  See Genealogy Chart for further generations.

KAREN GAARD daughter of NELS was born in 1863.  She also came to America.  She never married and lived with brothers, sister and a niece.  she was born with short legs, club feet and minus some fingers, but it didn’t stop her from taking blue ribbons for her fancy work at state fairs.  In spite of her handicap she had a congenial personality and lived to a ripe old age.

ELI the only daughter of JACOB NELSON SKJALEVER came to America.  Her nephews built a house for her in Liberty township and she livered there until she was unable to care for herself.  her nephews in Liberty township and Jacob Shelver near Kindred cared for her until they put her in a rest home where she passed away.  She had either asthma or a bronchial condition, there being much coughing connected with it.  some people thought she had tuberculosis and feared for their children whom Eli just wanted to hold and love.

JACOB SHELVER married Maren Skjitren in Oslo, Norway.  They came to the United States in 1863 and settled at Decorah, Iowa.  With them was their first born daughter Eli.  They lived in Decorah for nine years.  Daughter Martha was born there … they then moved to Cass County near Kindred, North Dakota which was at that time Dakota Territory.  They took a homestead there.  This was in Norman township, northeast of kindred along the Sheyenne River Red River of the North.  To Jacob and wife Maren were born six more children.  They were Julia, Julius, Christine, Clara, Otto and Albert.  Julia was born in 1876.  Julius was born in 1878. Both died during the Diphtheria epidemic.  Julia was 4 ½ and Julius 2 ½.  Martha Shelver was born March 17, 1865.  She was married to Lawrence Vangerud.  Their children were Carl, Mentz, Ingvald, Lauris, Melvin, Laura and Selma.  Ingvald was married to Betsy Gaard.  They had two sons and two daughters, Isel and Lien, Beverly and May.  All deceased except Selma who is married to Melvin Simonson and they live in Texas.

CHRISTINE SHELVER was married to Elias Gubrud.  She passed away in 1936.  They had one son and eight daughters.  They were Joseph, Minnie, Selma, Alma, Mabel (Alma and Mabel were twins.), Ellen, Gladys, Olga and Eli.

MINNIE CLARIS was born November 17, 1898.  She married Axel Flaa in 1925.  They had two children .. Joel who is single and Mary Ann who is married to Harold Anstrup.  Their children were Randy, Mark and Charles.

SELMA CHRISTINE died when young.

ALMA was born in 1904.  She married Andrew Flaa.  He passed away in 1962.

MABEL ELISE (twin of Alma’s) born on March 30, 1904.  Mabel and her husband farmed the homestead of her grandfather, Jacob Shelver northeast of Kindred, North Dakota.  It’s a lovely farm on the banks of the Red River.  An old granary still stands in good condition that JOHANNES SHELVER built in the 1800’s.  Johannes’ wife and two sons made their home on that farm until he got a house built on his homestead south of Enderlin, North Dakota.

ELLA KARINE was born on August 2, 1905.  She married Orville Touissant.

GLADYS GENEVA was born May 18, 1913.  She married Jacob Schleisman.

OLGA PALMER was born August 5, 1902 and died in 1918.

THE JOHANNES SHELVER FAMILY

Hans, Peter J. (Peter Schneider’s grandfather), Jacob and Martin (twins), Thorval, Iver and Nels.

JOHANNES,  his wife, son Iver (15 yrs.) and son Nels (13 yrs.) came to the United States, Dakota Territory, near Kindred in 1880.  His brother and family lived there.  While there he did carpenter work.  In 1881 he went to Ransom County and filed for a homestead in Liberty township on section 34.  This land joined his sons, Peter, Jacob and Martin.  Peter and Jacob put in his first crop.  Johannes went back to Kindred and in 1882 he brought his family to Liberty Township.  He and his sons built a house for his family.  He spoke no English but at that time very little English was spoke n as it was a Norwegian settlement.  Coming from timber country in Norway he loved to make things out of wood.  Being a tailor at one time he made the fancy dress his wife wore for family pictures (picture in this book Transcriber’s note—no photo’s in my copy but what a treasure that photo must be.  Johannes must have been a wonderful husband.).  He was a versatile man and much loved by everyone.  He turned over his homestead to his son Iver for farming the land and for caring for him and his wife in their old age.  He died February 1, 1905 and his wife died July 3, 189-04.  Funeral write-ups state there were over forty teams in the funeral procession for both parents.
